Counihan, Noel (1913 - 1986)

Noel Counihan original cartoon artwork.

Noel Counihan was a painter, cartoonist and illustrator of national standing noted for his socialist-realist style and radical outlook, whose reputation continued to grow after his death. A communist, his passionate concern with civil rights and free speech often led to conflicts with authorities. From 1934 he worked as a cartoonist for various publications, including The Bulletin and the Communist Party's paper, the Guardian from 1945 to 1949 and again from 1952 to 1958. Counihan maintained that the artist had a duty to "gather information from the political developments of the time."
